Michigan Part I: Six Sisters Ranch

Welcome to the Barn...the barn...the most beautiful barn in all the land...with a lake surround, a pasture of horses, and one of longhorn cattle too! This ranch is breathtaking, and the family behind it is just as beautiful! We had such a great time here, loving God's beauty and meeting/making friendships.

We stayed in a log cabin with the Morrells, Browns, and other friends, down a dirt road just a minute away. Such a fun place for making great memories together.

Fresh picked apples! Honey Crisp at that, and absolutely the best apple I have ever bit into!!! There were baskets of fresh picked peaches, plums, & apples at the front door, and Mikaela would grab a few apples to take to the horses in the pasture.

My kids were in heaven at the Barn! Zachy was stoked to play and Mikaela was even thrilled to muck the stalls. She stomped around in her boots like she owned the place.

The reason we made the trek to begin with! The reason we traveled 20 hours between 3 planes, layovers and the drive, and let me tell you....SO WORTH IT!

Absolutely stunning! Absolutely an honor to attend! Michael and I just love their redemptive love story. How in their individual obedience and surrender to Him, He brings them each their beloved gifts. Each other. We love you guys, and are stoked for your new journey in marriage, to bring all glory & praise to our Lord! Thank you for inviting us to share in your special day!

Well, there's gotta be somethin' to say about these guys, to get a RV full of riff-raff to travel from NY to MI. Add some more stragglers to get a crowd like this...the closest of friends come together to celebrate such an event. All while making even more memories to add to the lifetime of friendships! SO AWESOME...you can't just make this stuff up ;)

The Famous Fort: full of restored settings and pieces of history. We walked through the town as if it were the 1800's.

Not a single motor vehicle on island. Mode of transportation is horse & carriage &/or bicycles. Awesome. The huge draft & clydesdale horses clip clop all day long. A pair can haul up to 8000 lbs. (in the pic are on the small side comparatively)

First Day of School!!!

Tuesday, August 17th, 2011, marked the first day of Kindergarten for my first born! Absolutely crazy! And what's even crazier than that? Her teacher!

Mikaela loved her first day of kindergarten at our Home School! She was so excited about her classroom, she kept hugging me saying, "thank you mommy!". Precious. I am so honored to be able to do school with her, to watch her learn, train her up and experience life with her at school! It is an incredible joy to witness my kids minds grow, in knowledge and their hearts grow with love! It makes my heart overflow!

I'm thankful for this time we have together. Mikaela is not quite 5 yet, and this is the perfect year for us to test out these waters. For some private schools, she wouldn't be old enough to start, and for public it would be an either or thing. So whatever way things end up working, she'll be set!

Our little man is 2 years old! Crazy uh? Zachy Boy is our amazing miracle boy and we are so, so in love with him! Can't believe it's been 2 whole years...God has truly blessed our family with our Zachy Boy!

He captures your heart with his cute voice & he's an excellent communicator making sure you keep eye contact and if your not, he'll turn your cheek with his sweet hands, he has the best "cheese" face for pictures. He's a country boy-knowing all the words to the song "chicken fried". He's doing a great job walking with his braces and walker, doing his best when he has an audience. Which most of the time he's got one! He has a love hate relationship with "rosey's" (horses) & doggies. He has a best friend wherever we go! He wishes he was an animal rescuer with "Go Diego Go!!!! & "Alwicia!". We think he's a genius. He knows he is. (: He loves to "go fast!" and will order you to if your within range. His fav place to eat is Outback, he loves their mac 'n cheese. He absolutely adores his sissy! And gives the best hugs. He'll ask you, "squeeze me" when he wants a great big hug. He likes to "jump" & "hop" like a frog. When he's reading a book he studies it intently. He thinks he's superman when Daddy throws him high into the air and also into the pillows on the bed. I could just go on and on about how great this kid is - how much we love him - and how incredibly blessed we are by God's gift to us!

This past weekend was a "Gribas Weekend"! Adam & Ellie are moving to Texas tomorrow :( We had a huge block party going away party for them on Saturday. And we celebrated their little baby growing inside Ellie on Sunday! I was kinda in a funk for both events, and I was trying to figure out why. They were fun filled times, with tons of great friends and fellowship. Granted, I was fighting off a cold, but still...so, after evaluating my thoughts at both functions I've come to the conclusion that: I'M SAD. So sad to see them go. Every time I think about it I tear up and my heart hurts. (Actually I have tears streaming my face as I type) So I think this weekend i kinda made myself go numb.

I love them so much! Our family loves them so much! They are going to be deeply missed! I hate the thought of not being able to see Ellie's tummy grow with that precious baby! And to not see Adam as a Daddy just wrecks me! I can't stand it!

Michael & I met Adam 8 years ago at Hume....He came out for our wedding in the fall of '03 and never left. He lived in "our first home" before I even did! Twice! ha! He became family and Maui became home! We were in ministry together forever! We did life together! And then finally, God's beautiful gift came to him in Ellie, and when he met her we were beyond excited! Together they are such an incredible story of God's perfect timing and orchestrating. Michael was in their wedding. They've been married over a year now, and we even lived on the same street. They announced their move a few months ago and days later found out they were prego! (:

Which brings us to now...it's good-bye for now....please don't get me wrong, I am so stoked for their new adventures in Texas, and for them to be close to family, and all the new opportunities that await this oh so amazing couple! But, the selfish part of me wants to keep them here! Close to us! Mikaela & Zachy Boy are totally gonna miss their Uncle Adam & Auntie Ellie too. So at this moment, with more sadness than gladness, I have to say, Aloha.....We LOVE you 3 dearly and you will be terribly missed. (more tears)

Our prayer is that he grow to know, love and serve the Lord. That he would make a huge impact in this world for Christ, and his identity be found solely in Jesus. That he would love deeply and touch peoples hearts with the joy of Christ.

Such a privilege to know he already has and is touching so many hearts. Not even 2 years old, and he has brought our family so much closer to God! We are confident it wont stop either! I'm so thankful for this little guy and the family and community we are blessed to raise him in. We are "doing life" with such incredible people! Easter Sunday was awesome! Above my kids in their "Sunday's Best", on our way to church.

He is RISEN, He is RISEN INDEED! So, so amazing to proclaim that truth! The foundation of our faith, the reason we can have relationship with God. I love it!!! Such an undeserved gift, such an incredible display of my God and HIS Power!!!

We had a blast down at Makena, gathered with old and new friends, enjoying the beauty of the day and my parents ranch. Building relationship through fellowship. Gotta love it!

Resurrection Eggs

I made Resurrection Eggs this year thanks to an inspiring mentor, Chris Mauck. There are 12 eggs, and each contains an excerpt from scripture and a tangible object description. You start 12 days before Easter Sunday, opening one egg a day, reading and discussing its importance. Telling the story of the Cross, Jesus' Death and ultimately His Resurrection!

I just love making traditions and memories with my kids and being intentional about the activities we do together. Mikaela totally "got it" and within the week she was close to "expert" in re-telling the story. A story of a real event, making real sense to her, making real deposits in her heart. Amazing. Michael and I would just look at each other in amazement as she recited what we was learning each day.

Here are all 12 "objects". The 12th is an empty egg because, He's not there, HE IS RISEN!!!!!!

Hana Bound

Some of our best friends, the Coetzee's we're in town, so we planned a "day trip" to Hana. It as awesome! Michael & Brynne, Danielle & Linus, James, Ben and the four of us. Mikaela & Zach had such a blast!

We drove out the back way and stopped in Kanaio at the historic St. Joseph's Church. It's beautifully surreal.

Then, Mikaela was stoked to hike up to Secret Falls, and Zachy Boy thought it was pretty cool that the waterfall could blow his hair around so much. We were the only ones there (since it's secret) and it couldn't of had better conditions.

On to Hamoa Bay, A-MAZING. Postcard perfect weather with crystal clear waters. We ate lunch on the beach while the guys surfed. Mikaela even caught some waves on her body board. She rode a couple all the way in, wiped out pretty good, and even went back out for more. A very proud moment for her Daddy.

We ended off the day with a stop at Wai'anapanapa. (I have really fun memories of camping there as a kid) We said hello to a monk seal who was basking in the sun on the black sand beach, and hiked to the caves. Mikaela and Zach both swam with us all the way through to the back of the caves in the freezing fresh water.

The day couldn't of been better! The kids were STOKED all day! I love that we can do such fun things with our family and friends. Our life is an awesome adventure! God's creation is absolutely mind blowing, and so much fun to enjoy!

I love my mama so much! 26 years ago I pretty much interrupted her birthday trying to have mine! But since it was 2 months from my due date they tried to keep me in. So my mom spent her special day and the next month in the hospital with me. She hasn't stopped sacrificing either. God blessed me majorly when He gave me her. I am so thankful to have such an incredible mommy. She is fun, entertaining, go get um, compassionate, wise and discerning, giving, capable of anything, she loves God and taught us to do the same. She is an over-comer, rise above, hard worker, who touches peoples lives in deep personal ways, and brings beauty wherever she goes! I'm so honored to celebrate her today and her life of accomplishments and LOVE! She is amazing, happy birthday mom, love you!

Besides my adorable little rancher/cowgirl....

Lava Java (Mauka) was absolutely beautiful this weekend! Mame (my grandma) was visiting from Kansas, so it was fun to show her the property upcountry. The sky was lending a light mist all day, and we had so much fun stompin around in the mud at this glorious place. Mikaela was so proud to show off her Glamma & Papa's ranch. (:

As for Lava Java (Makai), the Makena version, there are 2 new additions. Twin Baby Goats! A boy and girl. Mikaela has already named the girl "Sunny", since her head is lighter from the sun. (all her own her logic by the way)

So, yesterday we visited the goats, trained Chance, and walked across the street to the beach which was undeniably breathtaking!

So by lunch we fed & trained horses and goats & watched baby whales breaching, splashing in the ocean, & turtles pop us to say hi. This is paradise.

Michael and Mikaela got to go fishing with Papa on Da Guppy! For Christmas, Papa bought Mikaela her first fishing pole. She was so excited to be on the boat. They saw turtle and whales, and will have to keep practicing the "catching fish" part. (: Needless to say she had a pretty fun first time on the boat and can't wait to go out again!

1st Hair Cut!

Zach is known for his crazy hair!!! I've been asking Michael if we can trim his bangs so he can see, and he's totally been holding out. Until today that is...Michael took him over to Oma & Papa's so he (Michael) could cut his hair with their Flo-Bee. Well, they ended up giving Zachy his first hair cut! It needs some touch up for sure, and I was a pretty bummed I wasn't there to witness it, but he still looks super cute!

A whole year ago, Valentine's Day 2010.

My sweet kids keep growing! I miss the "little" of them, but it really is so amazing to watch the "growing" they do. Mikaela especially is growing in her love for God. She often asks me, "Mom, do you know who I love the most? God. and Jesus. then you and Daddy & Zachy." It blows my mind every time & overwhelms me with joy!

Mikaela and I have already started our valentines. (: I love making them with her! It's such a fun holiday to celebrate LOVE, The LOVE God has for us, the LOVE of friends, the LOVE of marriage, the LOVE of family....

Wine, Women & Shoes was held earlier this month at the Four Seasons. It was the 2nd annual fundraiser for Imua Family Services. Zachy Boy receives physical therapy weekly through this incredible program! He just loves his Auntie Carol. My mom was asked to share during the event. She spoke about how great Zach is doing, and so much is from the therapy he receives! She brought Zach up on stage and everyone cheered! We are truly thankful for IMUA!

And the rain, rain, rain, came down, down, down...along with thunder and lightning! All night long! But this is the cool thing about "Maui Storms"...

The sun always seems to peek through at some point. Sometimes it decides to stay and others time it just comes out to say hi, and lets the rolling clouds come in.

The not so cool part? Flooding. Everywhere. Both our parents houses seem to be targets for the excess water. My parents back yard/gulch was completely destroyed...

"Its all in good Maui fun, now we just get to make something new." - Dad, as he's soaked & muddy cleaning up all kinds of debris. Gotta Love It!

At first I thought I was "on a roll", with posting so much to the blog. Then it seemed more fitting to say that Zachy Boy is on a roll! He's been practicing a bunch with his walker and braces and is doing awesome!!! He likes it more when Mikaela is the target and will get moving quicker if he's anxious to "get her"!

Here he is tonight, taking his little steps and breaking to "say cheese".

Imua, the program that provides his physical therapy is lending him this cool walker for however long he needs it. Jimmy Buffett was a huge sponsor of the program, so we have him to thank. Carol, Zach's PT, is absolutely amazing, and we are so blessed she comes to work with Zachy Boy!

Yep, that's my husband! He married Andrew & Joelle almost a year and a half ago, on July 11th i think. I was just going through old emails, and Jenna had emailed me these, since I couldn't be at their wedding. ): I was on Oahu with Zach and Michael was going back and forth. So this was a very joyous time in the midst of some not so fun times in the hospital. We just adore this beautiful couple, and now they are living on Oahu. So Zachy and I get to see them every time we go for check-ups.

Anyway, this is a totally random post, but when I saw these pictures, I thought, Yep, that's my husband! I'm proud and certainly blessed! And he was so stoked and honored to be a part of this beautiful wedding!!! Love you, Michael.

Joelle & Andrew are amazing examples of lives glorifying God. They LOVE Him with all their hearts and love others incredibly well. And we love you Andrew & Joelle!!!

On the Ranch...

We've been up here all year! It's such an amazing display of God's beautiful creation. Yesterday we had friends come up, rode the Bronco, played with the horses and cows, BBQ ed a yummy dinner, and watched as God painted the sky with pretty pinks and purples. After everyone had gone, our family (O'Brien) gazed at the wonder of His scattered stars and shared our thoughts for the coming year.

You see, every year we have a "goal setting dinner". This year it got "re-scheduled" and without our planning or a reservation, it happened last night at Lava Java. Under the stars, with the cold wind blowing through the trees, snuggied all up on lawn chairs, happy to just be together without distraction. Only with the light of the moon and stars.

2010: What a year! Zach started crawling! We moved to our new house in Kihei. Love our new home, and we have a really great neighborhood and community. Mikaela started a 2 day/week preschool. We opened hotel Woodard (we love having our guest room!). ZACHY BOY’S 1st Birthday! Mikaela learned to swim! Oahu, and Dr. appts. ,Zach’s 8th surgery (just a hernia), and our friends in town! Big girl bike for Mikaela, Hana camping trip, lots of shave ice with the neighbors! Zachy Boy got braces for his feet. Had fun all over CA! Michael & Ciara celebrated 7 years of awesomeness (marriage), MIKAELA turned 4!!!
We are so loving our little family, and treasure every moment with each other. Our Mikaela is growing before our very eyes and we are so grateful she is beginning to understand so much about her Savior. She is a true JOY in every way. She is such a beauty and so is her heart. She is the bestest big sister and has a fun sense of humor. Mikaela can also touch the depths of your heart with her thoughts, words and actions. WE LOVE HER!

Zach is amazing too! We are beyond thankful for how well our little man is doing, he is the sweetest little boy and we have so much fun with him. He’s super smart too, and talks so much! Zachs voice is so cute. He loves to play with his big sister and “whide” on the skateboard. Dad even takes him body boarding to “get barreled”. He has a way of making you feel so special and gives the most tender hugs. WE LOVE HIM!
We are the most blessed parents and couldn’t ask for anything more. We are so thankful for our marriage and God’s presence in our life! We are surrounded by people we love and are honored to “do life” with you.
May you know and feel God’s love now and always. The gift of His son is an unbelievable grace.

Oh Christmas Tree

Yesterday Oma & Papa took us up to Kula's Calasa Farms. They buy their Christmas tree from this farm every year. A really sweet couple has been running it forever! They have beautiful Christmas Trees on a beautiful piece of land Upcountry.

We strolled through the all the pretty trees. Mikaela picked the one she thought Oma & Papa should have, and Mr. Calasa cut it down right in front of us. He put it on the little tram type thing he has and drove it to our car. Mikaela and Zachy rode with Papa and the tree. Mr.& Mrs. Calasa will then plant another tree in the same spot he cut ours down. I love that because when your walking through the farm, there are all sizes and shapes of trees.

Did you notice Mikaela's and Zach's super cute shirts? My friend Amy hand stitched those cute fabrics on them to make Zach a tie, and Mikaela a Christmas tree! LOVE THEM!

Just thought I'd write down my 2 things my kids did today...

Zachy Boy woke up before Michael left this morning and when he saw that Daddy was just about to leave he turned to him with his cute pursed lips and said, "kiss!". So adorable!

I asked Mikaela to go get dressed for preschool this morning and she came out with a purple velvet dress, complete with shiny necklace, crown and shoes. "Mommy I'm a Princess today!" I quietly snuck a extra pair of clothes in her lunch box,but she arrived at school today as a Princess!

Our newest nephew is already a week old! Joel David was born on Nov. 30th, 2010. He is absolutely perfect, and soooooo handsome! We so wish we could hold him in our arms, but that will have to wait til we make the trek overseas. We miss their whole family so much! But, Melissa is really good about posting pictures, so we are thankful we get to "see" the little guy grow. Joel has two pretty awesome big brothers, Kiah and Isaiah.

4 Years Old!!!!

Do you know that mommy feeling of loving your baby so much that is hurts sometimes? I feel that way when I think of my daughter! Knowing how strong the love for your children is always puts me in awe when I relate it to God's love for me.

My baby girl came into the world at 2 a.m. FOUR years ago! I cannot even begin to express what a JOY she is! A most precious gift, I am so blessed to be her mommy. My Mikaela Joy is so much fun, she has the sweetest spirit, and I LOVE HER more than words.

Lately she has loved practicing her writing skills, skating with Daddy, and loving on her little brother. She is the bestest big sister! She charges on the skate board, and is enjoying her 2 day/week preschool. She is SO beautiful inside and out! When you ask her how she got so cute she replies, "because God made me that way!" LOVE IT!

The other day she was fishing in the tide pools with Auntie Cassie, and Cass asked her what she was going to do with all the fish she caught. She looked up at her very matter-of-fact, and said, "We're gonna throw them back, cause we are just borrowing them from God."

I love that her little heart is becoming so aware of her Savior at such a young age. I am SO thankful for her, and her heart for others, her sweet hugs and kisses and her fun thoughts.

Happy 4th Birthday baby girl! I love you so, so, so, so ,so much, forever and ever and ever!

A lot happens in 7 years! We've moved 7 times. Had 2 kids. We've been to Canada, Mexico, Seattle, Oregon, Utah and California as a married couple.....and so on and so forth.....

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this man I am honored to call husband! What a meaningful, exciting life we live together!

Hello November 2010, You came quite fast this year! Mikaela will be four in a few weeks! She is the most amazing little girl with the sweetest spirit! I love her beyond compare and am honored that God gifted me with her!

We have so much to be Thankful for, God is good all the time, faithful through storms and joyous on the mountain tops. We are so grateful for His never-ending Love and rejoice that He is our Savior!

Zachy is doing well, has braces for his precious feet, and continues physical therapy every week. This week he said his therapists name and it was super cute! When he sees her at the door, he races for her and always greets her with a big smile. We are so blessed to have her in our lives and are beyond thankful for all the time she spends with Zach.

Thank you so much to Gary & Court for putting us all up, or should I say, putting up with all of us!

We had a great time in CA, and we're all over the place. Oceanside, Costa Mesa, Torrance (only for my beautiful sister, haha), Riverside (Calimesa & Yucaipa), Nipomo, Bakersfield, Agua Dulce.....all in 2 weeks! Mikaela and Zach did amazing! Michael is professional road trip driver and super fun to have my sister with us too! We made a lot of fun memories and will have stories to tell for awhile. Stoked to see so much family, and friends. Stoked to party, stoked to be together!

Makawao Cowgirl

My mama has a new found hobbie. She's been sorting with some of her friends at the Oskie Rice Arena in Makawao. We went up to watch, and Mikaela asked if she could try all by herself. She asked Glamma if she could train Java to rope & sort. It was adorable, I love that she gets to grow up with these horses and her Cowgirl Glamma! Glamma won 2nd place in the Jackpot later that day! She's only done it a few times, but my mom is never afraid to try anything new!

Mikaela's been up on those giant horses since she was only months old. That's probably why Mik has the confidence she does. My kids lives will never be dull growing up with my mama, I love it! Thank you Glamma for making such fun memories with your grandkids.

Happy Happy Birthday to the bestest husband, daddy & friend ever! I'm sorry that you had to spend the whole day working from 5:30am to 8:15pm. You are amazing and I love you with all of my heart. It's just prime example of your hard work, dedication, sacrifice and loyalty. Seeing things all the way through and not looking for a easy way out. Giving it all you've got and then some! I love that that is how you choose to live your life before the Lord and for the Lord. Giving your all, your whole heart! I love your whole heart and am so beyond blessed to be your wife and mother of your kids. They absolutely adore you and are so, so proud to call you Daddy.

I love this picture. It just says, SUMMER! And now its mid September, so I'm excited that Fall is on it's way. I know, I live in Maui, but I still anticipate the season and love making it feel as real as possible.

Here Mikaela and the neighborhood girlies are stoked to have shave ice. They were so cute sitting there talking and laughing, enjoying their cool treat. Charlotte and Faith are 4 and 5, and Mikaela LOVES that they live down the street. So cool that at age 3, she has some great friends, and I'm looking forward to their relationships growing.

So even though, September and October are the hottest months here on Maui, we welcome fall. hahaha!

Hana

3 weekends ago we all went camping in Hana! Such a blast, just like when we were kids! All the groms were there, and we agreed it's gotta be an annual thing again. Dad brought the set up, with an awesome tent, and an oven ha! He was surrounded by munchkins awaiting hot brownies! Mikaela wasn't ready to go home and asked if we could PLEASE sleep in the tent 3 more nights. I think all the kids would be completely content to camp forever!

Big Girl Bike

Michael and I decided to surprise Mikaela with a big girl bike last month! She was SO ready! She's already asking us to take the training wheels off, but we're trying to convince her to practice a bit more before that big day comes. One day at a time, Mikaela, don't grow up too fast.

Braces

Zach was fitted for his foot braces in July at Shriners on Oahu. We pick them up tomorrow here on Maui. He is doing so well right now, I know these braces will give him that little extra support he needs. August & Oahu

Zachy Boy had 3 Dr. appointments this month on Oahu, so he and mommy are expert quick day trip travelers. Every one of them was a breeze, with all the Dr's saying "he looks great!". Even thought it absorbs our entire day for a quick 5 minutes with the Dr., I'll take it! We are SO, SO thankful he is doing so well!

We brought Mikaela and Daddy along for one of the appts. and decided to make a weekend of it. We got to hang with Joey & Andrew, spend the night at the Sheraton again, and go to our favorites, Bubbies ice cream mochi, Ich-Ben with the best kalbi, teri chicken plate ever. Of course ventured to some new ones, Tropical Rush organic fro-yo, Diamond Head Grill for real "dirty" kine plate lunch.

Mikaela went down the big slide at the hotel and this time knew she could survive the outcome cause she's and expert swimmer! And we sent Zachy Boy down the little slide in his floatie. So cute. Love having so much fun times with these ever growing munchkins of mine.

Our favorite Christenson's came back for round 2! Loved it! Gary & Courtney & Joelle had to make one last Maui stop before baby girl #2 arrives in December!
We are so stoked to party everytime they come, and we are always sad when they have to go.

Surgery #8

Zachy just had his 8th surgery, a hernia surgery. I went over to Oahu by myself with him, they had me walk him all the way to the operating room and let me lay him on the table. The walk out of the OR alone with my son out of my hands was pretty nerve wrecking. I clung to the peace knowing that he was in God's hands. Of course, an hour later when he was out of surgery, he was melting all the nurses hearts, smiling and talking, showing his audience his nose. Bounced right back! We came home the same day and he just hit the ground crawling! I love his little fighter joyous spirit!

July 4th: Happy Independence Day! We celebrated at the glorious Makena House and also celebrated Zach's buddy Kyne's 1st birthday. Kyne is Kade's (mik's best friend) little bro.

July 5th: Kyne's real bday, we were at the Makena House again & MIKAELA LEARNED HOW TO SWIM ALL BY HERSELF! I am extremely proud of her and so glad that she is a little fish in and out of the water! She is stoked and just JUMPS in and SWIMS HALF THE POOL!

On July 3rd we had a Dinosaur celebration at our house, with shave ice, crafts, games, the balloon guy and WONDERFUL FAMILY & FRIENDS! SO FUN!
